2015 Ford Mustang

Although I don’t often talk about new cars on this site, I thought I would give my thoughts on the 2015 Ford Mustang.  The main reason is that I see that Ford will be offering an Eco-Boost engine in the Mustang.

I have written about that before, but in this case Ford is using a four cylinder Eco-Boost.  So it is something like an updated version of the SVO Mustang from the 80’s.

I am sure that Ford went with the four cylinder rather than the V6 due to fuel economy reasons, as well as to not step on the toes of the GT and the 5.0.  And I am ok with Ford using a turbo engine in the Mustang, since it can only help the fuel economy numbers which will help the V8 version survive.

I am sure there will be people who don’t like the fact that it now will have independent rear suspension, but there is a reason the Mustang was the last RWD car with a solid rear axle.  That is a lot of extra weight to control, and despite the many years Ford spent developing it, the laws of physics won’t be denied.

I didn’t pay a lot of attention to the interior, as I haven’t even sat in one of the current ones to know what the changes really are, but if you compare pretty much any modern car to one from the 80’s, they are all pretty good.  After all, how much does the design of the dash really affect the driving of the car?  As long as the controls you need aren’t completely hidden, it isn’t that big of a deal.

I always find it amusing when I read a review and they mention the hard plastic of a dash.  I don’t know about you, but the only times I touch the dash on my car are to clean it, or reach for something I set up there.  And I don’t really care what it feels like.

I have also read that Ford is trying to have a version of the Mustang that will be marketable in more than just the US.  I am not sure if that is a good thing or not.  It seems that the pony car/muscle car segment that the Mustang represents is mostly a US thing anyway.  But if it helps keep the Mustang in production, then I am ok with it.

Is it a radical departure from the old?  Aside from the rear suspension, no.  Is it an evolution of the Mustang?  Yes.  will it help the Mustang survive?  I hope so.  I didn’t look at the sales figures on it until just now, but it looks like that form 2008 – 2012 have been the lowest numbers for sales since the Mustang was introduced.

So lets hope the 2015 Ford Mustang will help the Mustang survive.  After all, it is one of the original muscle cars, and the only one that has remained in production since it was introduced.

  1. Wife and I have talked about getting a Mustang as a fun car, not sure when/if it will happen but I would be fine with a 4 cylinder Eco-Boost Mustang. Would be more fun than my ZJ & get much better mileage as well as require less maintenance than my motorcyle.

    • I do like the Eco-Boost idea in a Mustang, although I would like the V6 version that is in the F-150 better. But I am sure that would cut into too many V8 sales.

It would be more fun than a ZJ, except in the snow. Although with snow tires it would be decent, it is still fun to have a 4×4 when the white stuff falls.

      • Yes, I love my ZJ in the snow. The NP249 & posi on dry pavement really chews up the tires though. Wife’s Explorer (4.0 SOHC) is good in snow too, makes me feel better that we both have 4wd now.
